The Joel Osteen and Jesse Duplantis Happy Hour

joel-osteen.jpgjesse_duplantis.jpg

This morning I was under the weather and so did a little channel surfing for my home church. I first watched Jesse Duplantis keeping his congregation in stiches with I have to admit a pretty funny half-hour. He carried, not a Bible, but a sketch book which he referred to often. He did mention the name of Jesus but never referred to a single Bible verse in his entire sermon. Instead he was telling about how his wife talked him into going to a supermarket. He added it was his first time at one of those in twenty years. He was amazed at the checkout counter and how everything was electonic. The clerk looked at him in amazement according to Duplantis. I was even more amazed at the lack of Scripture in his sermon and his congregation seemingly didn’t seem to care as they were too busy laughing at his one-liners.

Next up was Joel Osteen who even flashed his trademark smile to the camera catching a beam of light within his teeth. That made my day. He went on to say, “I’m not theologically deep, nor am I doctrinally deep. I instead speak encouragement. Those that don’t like what I preach are jealous of me”. Really? Well I’m not jealous of you at all Joel but I do feel sorry for you and even sorrier for your congregation. Osteen was also keeping his people in stiches with his humor but he did manage one Bible verse.

Osteen reminds me of the messenger of the king who carried the kings greeting to a true prophet of God. The messenger said, “Now, listen, the words of the prophets with one accord encourage the king. Please let your word be like the word of one of them (which were in actuality paid false prophets), and speak encouragement” 1 Kings 22:13. My good friend Dave Norris has often attached this verse to that of Matt. 7:13. The king and Joel Osteen, who seem to favor encouragement over that of the truth, would be told the following by Jesus- “FOR WIDE IS THE GATE AND BROAD IS THE WAY WHICH LEADS TO DESTRUCTION AND THERE ARE MANY WHO GO IN BY IT”.

On the other pathway of life is found the narrow way. “NARROW IS THE GATE AND DIFFICULT IS THE WAY WHICH LEADS TO LIFE AND THERE ARE FEW WHO FIND IT” Matt. 7:14. The Matthew-1 Kings 13-14 connection continues with how a true prophet of the Lord, Micaiah, responded to the kings words of encouragement to him. “WHATEVER THE LORD SAYS TO ME, THAT WILL I SPEAK” 1 Kings 22:14. Micaiah didn’t break into one liners or keep his audience in stiches, he spoke doctrine to the kings messenger.

Osteen and Duplantis speak great swelling words and flatter people to gain advantage (Jude 16). Huge congregations is not a sign of Godly discourse as Jesus would attest to in Matthew 7:13-14. “The time will come (and has) when they WILL NOT ENDURE SOUND DOCTRINE (remember Osteen’s own words), but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears; They will heap up for themselves teachers that will turn their ears AWAY from the truth and be turned aside to fables” 2 Tim. 4:3-4. Why Osteen and Duplantis do not regularily preach the word is beyond me. Perhaps they would rather amuse their congregations? If so, Jay Leno will soon be leaving the Tonight Show and maybe one of them would like to apply for that job?

  1. I have never heard of Joel Osteen before until now. Jesse Duplantis I use to watch in the early 90’s and never received any preaching of the Word of God except LAUGHTER.

Where is it written that God would give man a ministry of laughter (Duplantis) or a ministry of encouragement and laughter (Osteen)? In my Holy Bible (KJV) I find no preaching such as this. I guess they believe that laughter is the best medicine for the soul.

Joel Osteen speaking encouragement that’s a laugh in itself. How does that edify my soul? He needs to do nothing but seminars instead of standing behind a pulpit.

People are not going to inherit the Kingdom of God through encouragement and laughter. There’s no conviction in any of that. These “feel good” churches are nothing but a joke.

Jesse Duplantis and Joel Osteen need to become comedians and get out the pulpit. But they would never do that because there is more money to be made in what they are doing now plus they have the benefit of having a full house not only in their churches but via TV.

Jesus, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul, Timothy, James, Jude, etc.. and SPM are the ones who edify my soul and bring conviction to my heart and soul.

God have mercy on this nation!!!

  2. Christ was right when he said we are all sheep. Why are we so easily led astray.
Joel Osteen is elevator music, no commitment no guilt, the really sad thing about Joel is that I don’t really think he believes he is doing anything wrong. As with Jesse Duplantis who knows he is a fraud. One only here him talk about going to heaven and talking with Jesus and the apostles about telling everyone that Jesus is retuning soon. So what does he do, writes a book and sells it to people.

  3. I have heard so many people quoting Joel Osteen lately, including the Early Show
and my best friend who is an Assembly of God pastors’ wife. I decided to check him out for myself and discovered he doesn’t mention Jesus Christ. It’s always just God. He scares me for that reason. Obviously Jesus wasn’t as well liked as Joel and he was the son of God! Just a thought. Check it out for yourself.

  4. Well rather then condemning them as there is no love at all lets unpack a bit more….

Joel ::: I’m sure, with his encouragement and smile, he is quite pastoral. Being a good pastor doesn’t mean a good preacher. His lack of scripture is worrying i agree because faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God” Romans 10:17. He is a very good presenter of something but maybe preaching is not his best gift.

Jesse ::: Now this is a man who is always quoting scripture. He can’t shut up about the word of God and rightly so :o) I sometimes hear him and say now i’m not sure about that and it makes go a search and ask for revelation rather then just excepting what someone is saying. He does talk with great faith and it is encouraging.

[QUOTE: Vickie Kusky - Where is it written that God would give man a ministry of laughter (Duplantis) or a ministry of encouragement and laughter (Osteen)? In my Holy Bible (KJV) I find no preaching such as this. I guess they believe that laughter is the best medicine for the soul.]

Vickie - you need to know what your quoting. Your bible doesn;t say anything about laughter being ministering?? Proverbs 15:13 A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance. Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine. The fruit of the spirit is Love, JOY, etc.

Being Joyful in God’s presence is all through the Old testament. It’s key to proving God wants a relationship with Israel - read it before you quote it. It’s the message of the new testament - Good news. Are you sad when you hear good news??? NO your happy, joyful.

So don’t judge them from your lack of biblical knowledge. I’m not saying i’m a scholar in theology but I know what I want to talk about.

If you don’t like them don’t watch them….as you are not watching to hear the word of God, you know you are watching to condemn and judge them. I watch/listen to Jesse as I think he is a good preacher. I don’t watch Joel as it troubles me his lack of scripture with such a huge audience he could really push the gospel rather then positive thinking.

EDITORS NOTE: Well, someone, you remind me of the last verse in the book of Judges. “EVERYONE DID WHAT WAS RIGHT IN THEIR OWN EYES” Judges 21:25. In like manner, if you don’t like what we write here, don’t visit!

  5. I’ve watched Jesse off and on over a period of a few years and have had many a good laugh at his humor. He pretends to be a preacher but he is more of an entertainer. He has talked a lot about love and how we should love each other. But over time, I have seen another side of Jesse. He seems to hide his anger with jokes when someome doesn’t agree with him. He will insult you with a joke. Sometimes he gets downright crude!

Joel is a one note preacher. “My people perish for a lack of knowledge” Without a knowledge of the scriptures, you cannot fight spiritual warefare. Joel gets very little of his sermons from the Bible. He preaches The Power of Positive Thinking.

If you will notice, most of the Superstars of Christian TV don’t preach from the Bible. Or if they do, it’s only one aspect of the Bible. They recite only the verses that promote their favorite doctrine, such as Prosperity. They use the same verses over and over and never quote the many other verses that might contradict what they are promoting.

Be aware of false doctrine!! It can come out of the mouths of even the most beautiful people.

  6. I looked up humor and found jesse duplantis listed, but will his name be found in the book of life??? God will not be mocked.

  7. Yes indeed, the gospel wich Joel Osteen and Jesse Du Plantis preaches, is nothing more than a “be nice to everybody-gospel”. Subsequently, it is a “hidden call” for money; the more you give, the more you get. I am sorry to say this, but it is true.

  8. I believe Duplantis is a fraud because he is fixated with “Jesus was not poor” story. Duplantis only wants the best for himself a private plane etc etc
He does get very aggressive and angry when soemone doesn’t agree with him.

He is not equipped to deal with personla tradegy.
If someone first hears about Jesus through jesse then jesse ahs served a good purpose but I pray that people will move on and grow is Christianity.

  9. Once again, Joel Osteen’s utter failure to uphold Christian truth in an age of apostacy only further supports what is all too clear about his teaching: it is spiritually bankrupt.

  10. Unfortunately, regardless of how good or how bad these preachers are, television ministries always come back to prosperity. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. There is a reason for that scripture. The love of money is the root of all evil. Money is not evil, but when you put it above your salvation and those that follow you, that is a dangerous place to be.

  11. 2Co 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

For me, this verse describes Joel Osteen to a “T” !!

And, as the scripture states, we shouldn’t be surprised!! Satan is not going to cloak himself in something that isn’t attractive to the senses, such as Fred Phelps, although, I believe he is evil himself. But, I believe Joel Osteen is far more dangerous than Fred Phelps could ever be because 99% of the population has just written him(Phelps) off as a loon. Satan for the most part, is not going to be nearly as effective at deceiving people, when his messenger is considered a loon. He is going to use that which has credibility with the masses. In my lifetime(I’m 43), I have NEVER seen a pastor (I hesistate to use preacher of the Gospel for obvious reasons) who has a following like this man does. It’s not unusal for him to defended by atheists, which in and of it’s self, should be troubling to all believers. And the most ridiculous and disturbing part of it all, is that he says absolutely NOTHING of any spiritual value. It’s all cotton candy, which is nothing but spun sugar with food coloring added to make it attractive.

As for Duplantis, this man is nothing more than a pimpin clown on the face of Christ. His “claim” to have been transported to Heaven in a cable car and seen God is just laughable. According to his trip to Heaven, certain people have to be further prepared before they enter into the presence of God because they did not live their life to the fullest potential possible(whatever that means) in this world. This account of Heaven flies completely in the face of scripture(2nd Cor 5:17-21). We are the righteousness of Christ so the moment we exit our physical bodies and receive our glorified body, we will instantly be fully prepared (lacking nothing)to enter into His presence for eternity. This is apparently a biblical truth which is lost on Jesse Duplantis. I am thankful that my sanctification, isn’t dependent upon how I lived but rather how Jesus died.

  12. There is a real need for discernment in the church today. The Lord did tell us that the tares and the wheat would grow up together!

  13. I have heard Jesse Duplantis speak in person on a number of occasions. He does use the Bible and his entire sermons have been Scripturally based. I have also purchased a few books from his website. They are also full of Scripture. Maybe the Scripture is lost when the person editing down an hour and a half sermon into a half an hour TV program. ??
I have also watched Brother Duplantis give altar calls and people accept Jesus as their Savior.
Joel Osteen is not someone I would like to comment on but I thought “60 Minutes” asked a perfect question during an interview, “How can you preach and never mention the name Jesus?”
Jesus calls us to preach the Gospel (Mark 16:15) to all the world. But if someone’s preaching style isn’t about spreading the Gospel, but about peddling self-help and ‘good living’ then what does it matter in the end? If a person has lived by these principles but has never come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, then how has a self help book or a TV program really improve their lives???

  14. Matthew 7:15 - Jesus said that false prophets would come and we would know them by their fruti. Matthew 24:24 - False Christs would come doing signs and wonders. 2 Corinthians 11:13-15, False apostles will look like disciples of righteousness. The test for true versus false is fruit. What is the fruit of their mouth? What is the fruit of their loins? What is happening with the fruit of the Holy Spirit? Is it being developed in their life? You have to get close enough to the person to answer that one. A big problem with most televangelists. However, many have noted how angry and vengeful Dr. Duplantis can get if you disagree with him. And you are right on about love. Love does not mean no accountability. We are in a day and time when the purpose of the false is to draw away even the elect - if that is possible then - what happens to once saved always saved? I think it is out the window, too. Enduring to the end - then we get the reward! It truly is a day-by-day relationship. We must learn to hear the voice of God and to obey. Jesus said He did not do anything but the will of the Father. His sheep hear His voice. He that does the will of My Father. God has a plan. He has a will in every circumstance. We have to wait on Him for how to overcome. Oh, my!

Don’t get me started, or I’ll preach.

  15. Every time I flip through the channels and listen to Jesse Duplantis, I am sickened by his lies and obvious persuasion of the gullible. I have always believed that he is taking advantage of people’s faith in God and turning it into his own profit (seeds). I also saw the sermon where he talks about going to the grocery store for the first time in 25 years. It’s hard to believe but I Guess if you have as much money as him you really don’t have to go to the grocery store for yourself…or do anything for yourself.
His stories are outrageous and simply beyond belief. In my opinion he is a con man that must be stopped!

  16. I have listened to them both on many occasions. I believe that Joel’s presentation is simple and because he’s not really a preacher he stays with being simple, truth is people need more than truth and encouragement……they need conviction, but what he needs to do is bring in other Ministers and Evanggelists that can assist him in edifying his congregation in the area that he can’t or doesn’t. However everyone can use some encourgement. Jeese on the other hand preaches the word, he just doesn’t have enough time on the tv program for us to hear much, I do agree that he says much to only say a little, but he was an entertainer and God is still using him in that area, but to minister His word. He does have a different way, but at least sometimes it’s better to hear a one word and understand it and be able to keep it with you, than to go to Church and receive a whole much of truth and revelation from a great message and walk out with only one or two things or sometimes not even retaining any of it, because it was just too much and you weren’t able to chew on it.

    Blessings,

  17. Loved the title: “The Joel Osteen and Jesse Duplantis Happy Hour”

    LOL!

  18. I had the opportunity to visit a church recently to hear Jessie Duplantis, which was my first time to see him in person and really listen to him. I hesitate in what I should say, because I do not want to come across judgmental. I was, to put it mildly, shocked at alot of things he said. And not just that, but his attitude. There were people from different cultural backgrounds in the service, and he was mocking the way they talked - from the pulpit! He was making another one of his “funnies”, but I was embarassed for the people who the fun was being poked at. I was told I was taking him too seriously. I don’t remember walking into the comedy club, but into a house of God. I certainly believe it is fine and even a good thing to be happy and laugh together. That I don’t have a problem with. But not everything is a funny matter. And When he said that a lady approached him about why he had a jet - he got so ANGRY!!!. And everyone was laughing at his hateful responses to her. I know that might be a normal human response, but there are some things a preacher shouldn’t share with his congregation. I went with every intention of being blessed, but was so disappointed. I am really not trying to bash him - just saying I do not agree with alot of what he says. I have prayed that if my point of view is wrong, will the Lord change my attitude about him, or just learn to pray for him like myself and all the other people I pray for. We are all human, and should realize the Lord leads us, not the other way around, and WE need the Lord - I hardly think he needs us. He LOVES US and DESIRES US to be in his service and will and live our lives for Him. At least that is the way I was raised to believe. Thank you for letting me say what was on my heart.

  19. Rod, I don’t ever remember that kind of humor in the Bible stories I have read over the years. I have always heard that if you mock God, you better duck - never know when a stray lightening bolt might come visit. And what perplexes me about anyone that would call themselves a messenger of God -is that a nice healthy dose of Godly fear is missing from their “act”. I have once again learned not to put much stock in believing all who stand behind the pulpit. Everyone should listen then listen to their hearts and the Lord.
